The two main types of illumination required for built up letters are face and/or halo illumination.
Face illumination is when the LEDs are mounted to a back panel facing forward and illuminating the front of the lettering or the ‘face’, which is usually made from either an opal acrylic and sometimes covered with a coloured vinyl. The main factors in deciding which product and the amount required for this type of illumination are the return depth, stroke width, face material and colour.
The second type of illumination is called ‘halo’. This is when LEDs are mounted into a letter that has an opaque face, and the LED light bounces off this and out of the back of the letter, through a diffuser, and creates a ‘halo’ effect around the outside of the sign on the panel or wall it is mounted on. Again with this type of sign there are similar factors which affect which product to use but, these don’t just relate to the sign – the size of standoffs and the area behind the sign also needs to be considered to allow for maximum reflection of the light to give the halo effect.
